Engineering selection

How to Select a High Voltage DC Fuse

1

Define voltage

Use the maximum continuous DC voltage and credible transient conditions. The fuse DC voltage rating must meet or exceed the system requirement.
2

Calculate current

Apply continuous load, overload profile, ambient temperature, cooling, enclosure and busbar or cable conditions.
3

Check fault duty

Confirm prospective short-circuit current, circuit inductance and required breaking capacity at the stated voltage.
4

Verify coordination

Review time-current curves, pre-arcing and total I²t, peak let-through, cycling, vibration, dimensions and mounting torque.
Engineering note: A fuse cannot be selected from voltage and current alone. Breaking capacity, minimum breaking current, time-current performance and system coordination must be confirmed from the applicable model data.

Direct answer

What Is a High Voltage DC Fuse?

A high voltage DC fuse is a one-time overcurrent protection device designed to interrupt sustained direct-current faults without allowing the arc to continue. Compared with an AC circuit, a DC circuit has no natural current zero crossing, so the fuse must be designed and tested for the stated DC voltage, prospective fault current and circuit time constant.

DC fuse vs. AC fuse

  • Voltage rating: use a verified DC rating for DC circuits.
  • Arc interruption: DC faults require greater arc-control capability.
  • Breaking conditions: evaluate fault current and L/R or inductance.
  • Coordination: compare time-current curves and I²t with cables, batteries and power electronics.

Frequently asked questions

HVDC Fuse FAQ

Can an AC fuse be used in a high-voltage DC circuit?Use a fuse with an explicit DC rating at or above the maximum system voltage. A fuse rated only for AC may not safely interrupt a DC arc.
How do I choose the current rating?Start with maximum continuous current, then apply overload duty, ambient temperature, cooling, enclosure, cable or busbar size and the manufacturer’s derating guidance.
What breaking capacity is required? The fuse breaking capacity must exceed the maximum prospective short-circuit current under the published voltage and inductive conditions.
What do pre-arcing I²t and total I²t mean?Pre-arcing I²t describes energy before the fuse element melts; total I²t includes the subsequent arcing period. Both help evaluate equipment protection and coordination.
Why is the circuit L/R value important?L/R represents the DC circuit time constant. Greater inductance can sustain the arc and changes interruption duty, so breaking capacity must be read with its test conditions.
Which fuse is suitable for a 1500V battery energy storage system? The SES-159EI is published for 1500VDC, 1250–3000A and 250kA breaking capacity. Final selection still requires the complete fault, thermal and coordination profile.
What information should I send for fuse selection?Provide application, maximum DC voltage, continuous and overload current, prospective fault current, circuit inductance or L/R, ambient and cooling conditions, required clearing time, installation space and applicable standards.
